The mission of the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts is to deliver services and programs that aim to increase the economic self-reliance of African Americans and other people of color throughout our service area and to advocate for the core initiative and civil rights issues that critically affect their lives.
Advocates for Our PeopleThe Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts has a proud history of involvement in public policy discussions at the federal, state and local levels. Efforts are focused on reducing barriers to full employment, quality education, economic mobility and social justice affecting African Americans, other urban residents of color and lower-income communities.

Our LegacyFifty-two years after the Emancipation Proclamation abolished slavery and declared every man free in America, Boston began to change as Black migrants for the South and the West Indies arrived daily, full of hope, seeking the opportunities of a thriving industrial economy. Instead, they found discrimination that barred them from jobs and housing.
