Community Mobilization & Empowering Project: Moving Ahead

The Community Mobilization Empowerment Project is a four-year program of the Parent and Youth Services Department of the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts (ULEM) that is generously sponsored by the Gillette Company. The purpose of CMEP is to help parents improve their children's academic performance and social development by providing them with:

· Valuable skills and knowledge to become effective advocates for their child in the Boston Public Schools
· Educational workshops and seminars during the evenings
· A network of parents with whom to work
· Opportunities to participate in their child's education and after-school programming for their children

Community Mobilization

Moving Ahead seeks parents dedicated to improving their child's academic achievement by committing to goal setting and follow-through, being a reading role model, setting homework and achievement expectations and demonstrating civic responsibility in community volunteerism. We are also looking for parents who are willing to work on the CMEP: Moving Ahead Newsletter, as well as to teach what is learned to other parents in various community settings.

Contact the ULEM if you or someone you know wants to learn or polish skills in:

  • Community/Personal Advocacy
  • Workshop Facilitation
  • Public Speaking
  • Conference & Event Planning
  • Fundraising Strategies

CMEP targets urban parents with children in the Boston Public School system. CMEP outreach strategies include visits, letters, calls and information tables at churches, schools and other community-based organizations. All parents interested in increasing their ability to better support their child's education are welcome to join.
