ULEM launched the Volunteer 2 Work (V2W) in January of 2012. The V2W program was born from the concept of "On-the-Job Training" and is designed to teach the value of work through volunteer service to chronically unemployed and newly unemployed individuals who need a bridge to re-enter the job market.
It was such a huge success in its pilot phase that we have improved it by adding 3 weeks of Customer Service and Sales Training. Training includes five core competencies:
- Job Readiness
- Customer Service
- Telephone Skills
- Retail Sales
After the training, graduates will go into a 9 week internship and be placed at one of four agencies: the Greater Boston Food Bank, Mission Main, Boomerangs Clothing Store, or the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts. During that 9 week timeframe, they will be developing a job portfolio and working with our Job Placement Specialist to secure a job with one of our employer partners’ positions at Blue Cross Blue Shields of Massachusetts, Comcast NE Region, Tufts Medical, State Street Corporation, Stop and Shop, or Target. Individuals have also secured jobs in a wide variety of industries including: Apollo Security, Best Buy, Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Bertucci’s, Aids Action Committee, Adelco, and the American Red Cross.
