Virtual Anywhere User Library Technology (VAULT)

Developments in technology allocations, i.e. eRate, have given libraries opportunities to extend the delivery of their services beyond the branch libraries. Through the VAULT (Virtually Anywhere User Library Technology) project the Boston Public Library, in partnership with the Timothy Smith Network and other community-based intitiatives, has expanded its presence into every corner of the city.

The VAULT project will define what existing and new library services would be of most value translated into neighborhood and school settings. It will provide Internet access to allow organizations to create an AACT (Access, Analyze and Communicate Technology) library kiosk that will allow these services to be delivered cost-effectively initially through community organizations and schools and eventually through wireless networking to all public places. The menu of services that might be candidates for delivery via the Internet through the AAACT includes:

  • • Access to the BPL's online databases
  • • Access to the Internet and World Wide Web
  • • Reference librarian support through telephone, email or online chat
  • • Homework help line and programs for school children
  • • Topical book lists and other services for students
